We have been having a great time this week during our first Active Schools Week. 6th Class have been enjoying a week of sailing in the RCYC while Junior Infants, Senior Infants and First Class have all been finishing their exciting week of swimming. On Monday we had Tennis as well as well as lots of Physical Activity breaks during the day. Tuesday we had Sarah and Isaacs dad come in and teach us Athletics which was great fun while on Wednesday we started the day off with a Walk on Wednesday stroll from the tennis courts. Over the last few weeks the children have been learning lots of new dances in Physical Education (PE) and we had a school performance of ‘The Cuckoo Song’, ‘Siege of Ennis’, ‘Walls of Limerick’ and ‘The Nutcracker’. Thursday was our Walk for Water trip, which saw the whole school going on a walk to raise awareness and funds. They walked to the community centre where everyone filled up 1lt, 2lt, 3lt, and even 5 lt bottles of water and walked back up to school. Below are just a selection of the photos from our fantastic Active Schools Week and thank you to everyone who took part and helped out. For more information on the Active School Flag, check out the tabs above under activities.
At the start of the year an Active School Committee was chosen from a very enthusiastic group of students. Our committee is made up of a student from 6th, 5th, 4th (2 students) 3rd and 2nd class. We have weekly meetings where we discuss our aims and goals for the month and we review what has worked well and what we can improve on. We ran a competition at the start of the year where we picked our school slogan from a huge amount of entries. The winners slogan, and now our slogan for the school is……………………….’Hockey, tennis, swimming and more……..Templebreedy is active to the core!’ Our Active Schools board displays a range of these slogans, as well as tips and ideas of how to get healthy and moving throughout our days.
All classes have been participating in operation transformation 10@10 for the month of February and are loving it! With the weather being so temperamental lately it has been great that they are getting moving indoors as well as outdoors when possible! Below are children in the junior and senior classrooms enjoying some movement and exercise!
As part of working towards our active flag, we are completing a number of different active initiatives. We now have a very eager Active School Committee in place which will be introduced soon. We have been working hard on our Run Around Europe challenge, with the halfway progress reaching 4794km in three weeks. We started our 12 days of Fitmas challenge yesterday, where the children will complete a different exercise each day at 10am, 11am, 12pm, 1pm and 2pm. If you would like to continue the challenge at home then follow the daily plan above and complete on the hour, every hour. MERRY FITMAS EVERYONE!!!!
